THAT “but”, those 3 precious letters … 
that is your last chance to keep quiet and not behave like a fool.

Stop on the “but”. It's like a red light.
 
Hit the break. Think. Not twice, but for once. Use that little, last spark of awareness judiciously and … 

read the damn document first, before blathering about nothing, for BUT sake!

Not stopping at the BUT is linked to the bad linguistic habit of "howevering".

    ...and yet, Master Floridi, while we all often enough and serially miss the mark of reBUTtal when we surf the headline, the anecdote, the aphorism and the hazardous shallows of plausibly misleading or indistinct abstracts - what are we to do when the Spirit of the Age is as of an abbreviated, hollow, reflexive and potentially meaningless utterance? (The more meaningless, the more valuable as though by some form of inverse economy, attribution or absurdity of contraband antithesis.) Is it possible to hold back this tide of cognitive, linguistic and information (or energy) compression?

    My own howevercraft hovers just above the surface, unanchored and drifting in a prevailing wind... it is the cultivation of constructive entropy, of a turn towards the proliferating high-dimensionality and degrees of freedom that envelop us. Fakes fly further and faster than facts for the same reason assertions haunt half-understood headlines without once ever dipping their toes into the semantic depths of substantive prose that (might) lie beyond. Entropy self-propagates (as salience, information) through us. We are not agents so much as we are transmission medium; a semiotic seance of vacuous subjectivity.

    Have I missed the point? That, sir, precisely *is* my point.

They say that to call someone pedantic is an insult. I'm not so sure. True, someone pedantic is obsessed with minor details, small errors, or tiny imperfections. And a pedantic is also someone who cares too much about all such things not to let you know about them, advising or correcting, disagreeing or disapproving. And yes, if you are a pedant, you are more than just occasionally pedantic. On the value of taking care of the roses (series: notes to myself)

They say that what matters sometimes is not the outcome but the process: not the success or failure of an action, but just the action itself.  Maybe. But I always thought it was a bit of sour grapes. Didn’t really want beautiful roses in my garden, kind of line of thinking. The important thing was gardening. Or so you tell yourself, trying to be convincing.  But I recite this loudly a few times and it still sounds quite lame. It's the philosopher's fault, because he asks the unpleasant questions. Would you have done it anyway, even if the roses had no chance? But above all, what if the process itself is also pointless? Perhaps the gardening is a failure too, like the dead roses.  So you pause, on your way to the roses, and think: if the outcome is not what matters, and the process is not what matters, why caring for the roses? Better stop, or kill the realist awareness that shows the worthless nature of the whole enterprise.  Is there anything left, if all is a failure?

Philosophy has four sisters: Mathematics, Poetry, Religion, and Science. She envies all of them. She would like to be as powerfully abstract, and rigorously demonstrative, and practically useful, and timeless ... as she believes Mathematics to be. But failing, she ends up calculating the qualitative, formalising the undefinable, inferring the trivial, and missing the obvious: useless, empty, self-referential. She would like to be as delicately perceptive, and existentially fine-tuned, and meaningfully profound, and experientially rich ... as she believes Poetry to be. But failing, she ends up blathering obscure intuitions, prophesying in an esoteric language, playing with words while disrespecting facts and reasonings, obsessed with invented etymologies but oblivious of actual meanings: unhinged, nonsensical, unaccountable. Courage is a virtue. Everybody knows this. It’s one of the four classic ones. It's used as an example in any ethics class, often in some old-fashioned way. You know, like philosophers always talking about horses as if they were the most obvious objects in the world.  In the good old days (kind of), courage referred to your attitude in battle. And not in any battle, but one in which you engaged with the enemy in hand-to-hand combat, with weapons the size of a broom. After all, our founding father, Socrates, served in the Athenian army as hoplite and distinguished himself during the Peloponnesian war. Not your average prof in some academic ivory tower. Plato was taught by the equivalent of a decorated marine, who died for his beliefs. Aristotle argued that courage is in between rashness and cowardice. It seems something good, always to be praised.
