I just spent far too much time enjoying Dexter.

Four quick comments. to feel just a pinch less guilty (no spoilers):
  1. He owns a nice laptop and uses it quite regularly.
  2. He likes databases but we never see him (Seasons 1 and 2) checking Wikipedia (if he did, he would know there is more information about him there than he could stomach).
  3. He is very neat and tidy and almost autistically careful about order, but we never see him running an antivirus, or an anti-malware program.
  4. He is on the phone quite often.
About (1), you may like to know that he uses a Apple (Mac) powerbook (this may explain n. 3) and an Oakley S.I. bag. According to the linked article, the latter is discontinued and can only be bought on eBay.

About (4), he uses a Motorola i885 on the Boost network but in Season 2 he also seems rather fond of a Motorola Razor, previously owned by his mother's killer, I wonder why.

They say that what matters sometimes is not the outcome but the process: not the success or failure of an action, but just the action itself.  Maybe. But I always thought it was a bit of sour grapes. Didn’t really want beautiful roses in my garden, kind of line of thinking. The important thing was gardening. Or so you tell yourself, trying to be convincing.  But I recite this loudly a few times and it still sounds quite lame. It's the philosopher's fault, because he asks the unpleasant questions. Would you have done it anyway, even if the roses had no chance? But above all, what if the process itself is also pointless? Perhaps the gardening is a failure too, like the dead roses.  So you pause, on your way to the roses, and think: if the outcome is not what matters, and the process is not what matters, why caring for the roses? Nanotechnology is developing at a pace that makes many sci-fi scenarios outdated almost daily. This time, I'd like to report about tools and light. Carbon nanotubes are incredibly strong. They can resist to pressures as high as 40 gigapascals (ca. a tenth of the one at the center of the Earth). They have now been used to create metalworking tools (nanoscale jigs or extruders, see picture on the right). This could become an alternative way to manipulatating structures at the nanoscale. You could build them as you build a table. ( Science , "Carbon Nanotubes as High-Pressure Cylinders and Nanoextruders" Vol. 312, No. 5777, pages 1199 - 1202).
