Firefox Backers Create 'Destroy IE' Campaign

Firefox used to be the good guys' choice. But so was Google. And pro-environment policies. Or pro-life alternatives. The last attack on IE is a good reminder that we live in an ethically gray world. Animal activists will actually harm human animals to get other animals out of the labs. Firefoxers are now happy to intrude in the choices of users to free them from other intruders.
History repeats itself a bit too boringly sometime. In Luke 14:23 one can read (New International Version (NIV) Copyright 1973, 1978, 1984 by International Bible Society): "Then the master told his servant, 'Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full." "Make them come in" sounds very mild in English. The Latin translation left no doubts on the imperative nature of the suggestion: cogite or conpelle entrare. Force them to enter. Against their will, clearly. For their own good, obviously. And so Augustine used that passage to justify coercive conversion of non-Christians and punishment for heresy. Whoever runs the church (any church) knows better. The name of the church changes, but the "force them to enter" policy is always the same. Beware of believers, they often turn into crusaders.

    "Beware of believers, they often turn into crusaders." How true. I grew up in the "guilt based" tradition myself. I continue to see the "crusader" mentality evidenced every day. It goes hand in hand with fundamentalism (of any type). :-) Reading Augustine, for me, is about as fun as a root canal. Just my opinion tho.

They say that to call someone pedantic is an insult. I'm not so sure. True, someone pedantic is obsessed with minor details, small errors, or tiny imperfections. And a pedantic is also someone who cares too much about all such things not to let you know about them, advising or correcting, disagreeing or disapproving. And yes, if you are a pedant, you are more than just occasionally pedantic. This can happen to anybody, the excessive emphasis on some narrow or boring detail being a tendency we all share when it comes to matters about which we care very much. Gauss Professorship

Every year, the Göttingen Academy of Sciences (Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen) elects a Gauss Professor (Gauß-Professur der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen) to honour the memory of the great scientist . Normally, the Professorship is awarded to an "importat scientist in one of Gauss' fields of interest". So, no philosopher has been elected so far. They just made an exception. Next year, I will be their Gauss Professor, in recognition of my work on the philosophy of information. An overwhelming honour, but very exciting. No teaching, complete freedom of research and great support. Shame on me if I do not make the most of such a privilege. I better start revising my German.

On the value of taking care of the roses (series: notes to myself)

They say that what matters sometimes is not the outcome but the process: not the success or failure of an action, but just the action itself.  Maybe. But I always thought it was a bit of sour grapes. Didn’t really want beautiful roses in my garden, kind of line of thinking. The important thing was gardening. Or so you tell yourself, trying to be convincing.  But I recite this loudly a few times and it still sounds quite lame. It's the philosopher's fault, because he asks the unpleasant questions. Would you have done it anyway, even if the roses had no chance? But above all, what if the process itself is also pointless? Perhaps the gardening is a failure too, like the dead roses.  So you pause, on your way to the roses, and think: if the outcome is not what matters, and the process is not what matters, why caring for the roses? Better stop, or kill the realist awareness that shows the worthless nature of the whole enterprise.  Is there anything left, if all is a failure?

Philosophy has four sisters: Mathematics, Poetry, Religion, and Science. She envies all of them. She would like to be as powerfully abstract, and rigorously demonstrative, and practically useful, and timeless ... as she believes Mathematics to be. But failing, she ends up calculating the qualitative, formalising the undefinable, inferring the trivial, and missing the obvious: useless, empty, self-referential. She would like to be as delicately perceptive, and existentially fine-tuned, and meaningfully profound, and experientially rich ... as she believes Poetry to be. But failing, she ends up blathering obscure intuitions, prophesying in an esoteric language, playing with words while disrespecting facts and reasonings, obsessed with invented etymologies but oblivious of actual meanings: unhinged, nonsensical, unaccountable.
